De-Skunking Your Dog
Usually your first clue that your dog has been sprayed by a skunk is the odor (sometimes smelling like freshly brewed coffee for the first 20 seconds of the first wiff) and the fact Fido wants inside immediately. As soon as you realize you are dealing with a skunked dog, put on some rubber gloves, old clothes (preferably all rubber rain coat if available) and check your dog for any bites or scratches. If they have been hurt, immediately call your veterinarian!
Quickly gather your supplies and bathe the dog outside. The solution to mix in a plastic container is 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately and do not store the left over solution. We have found this solution to work fantastically!
Using a sponge or washcloth, massage the solution into the dog’s coat. Allow solution to sit for 5 minutes and rinse dog with warm water. Repeat until odor is gone. Hopefully your pet will not have made it inside, but if you need advise on your carpet or upholstery, give Chem-Dry of Michiana Carpet Cleaning a call.
