Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Frozen Pipes PreventionMichiana is suppose to get some bitterly cold temperatures in the next week.  It is a little late to do much outside preventative work, but the one thing you should do outside is disconnect any water hose connected to spigots if you have not already done so. There are some inside preventative measures you can take to help keep your pipes from freezing!

  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow the warmer air to circulate around the plumbing below the sinks! Make sure if you have small child or pets you remove any harmful cleaners stored under that sink!
  • If you have any water supply lines in the garage, keep your garage doors down.
  • If you have any pipes exposed to cold, moving air, insulate those pipes.
  • Let the water drip from your faucet if it is exposed to outside pipes. Even a trickle of water can help prevent pipes from freezing. This is not always a sure thing, but it can help.
  • Keep the temperature in the house the same during the day and night. It is colder at night, and if you lower the thermostat too low, you could have a pipe freeze.
  • If you go out of town, do NOT turn off the thermostat. Keep the heat on in your home and set the temperature no lower than 55 degrees.

Frozen pipes are no fun and can be quite costly to your home and belongings. If you have the unfortunate frozen pipe, call Chem-Dry of Michiana to help dry out your home and belongings. We will get you back to pre-loss condition – FAST!
