Oh the sweet smell of spring is upon us. And with spring air, comes all the animals out of hibernation. In our neighborhood, skunks seem to be a problem this year. At first it may smell like coffee, but soon you realize your poor pet has been sprayed by a skunk!!
As soon as you realize you are dealing with a skunked pet, put on some rubber gloves, old clothes (preferably all rubber rain coat if available) and check your pet for any bites or scratches. If they have been hurt, immediately call your veterinarian!
Quickly gather your supplies and bathe the pet outside. The solution to mix in a plastic container is 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately and do not store the left over solution. We have found this solution to work fantastically!
Using a sponge or washcloth, massage the solution into the pet’s coat. Allow solution to sit for 5 minutes and rinse pet with warm water. Repeat until odor is gone. Hopefully your pet will not have made it inside, but if you need advise on your carpet or upholstery, give Chem-Dry of Michiana Carpet Cleaning a call.
