Allergy Survival Tips

Allergy SeasonIt’s allergy season in Indiana and the pollen is flying. Having your carpet cleaned will go a long way in allergy relief as Chem-Dry removes 98% of common household allergens when the carpet and upholstery are cleaned. Other things to also try:
1) Use the air conditioning. It’s so hard to turn that thermostat to “cold” when it’s beautiful outside, but circulating “clean” air will help.
2) When you do finally open up the house, clean your screens. The pollens that have been “caught” in your screens can easily be washed off.
3) Exercise indoors to help keep allergy symptoms at bay. When you do go outside, wear a hat and sunglasses. And wash your face when you go back inside to remove the pollens that have “landed” there. A nightly shower will help pollens that have accumulated thru the day as well.
4) During allergy season, do not hang clothes outside to dry. This will capture many pollens that you’ll be bringing inside. And when you have been outside for a long period, especially in the woods or on the trails, keep those clothes out of the bedroom.
5) When cleaning outside, use the hose over the broom.
6) Purchase an “air-cleaning” plant for inside. English Ivy and Bamboo Palm are considered good “air-cleaning” plants.
7) Keep those carpets clean and vacuumed as carpet acts as a giant filter. The more you can do to help keep allergies controlled, the more relief you will get from all this pollen in the air!

Is that Pollen Inside my Home?

Allergy SeasonSpring is a beautiful time of year even between all those sneezes! Yes, pollen can find a way to get inside your home and into your carpet or upholstery. Carpet is one of the biggest “traps” of pollen. However, there are ways to help keep your home allergy-free.

  • Increase the frequency in which you dust and vacuum. There is no better way to help pollen-proof your home than to dust and vacuum frequently, especially in the spring when pollen levels are high. Dust and vacuum every few days, and if possible, every day. And make sure to dust everything! Not just that table in the family room. Dust areas you don’t normally think about like the ceiling fans, baseboards, and the figurines hidden in the bookcase.
  • Wear a pollen-proof mask while cleaning. By wearing a special, pollen-proof mask, you can help reduce your exposure to the pollens that have landed in your home and reduce your sneezing and allergy symptoms
  • Apply sticky tape to pollen stain on carpets and upholstery for a ‘quick fix.’ While no method is 100% in reducing pollens, this tape trick can help rid your home of obvious pollen stains on carpet and upholstery. This will help reduce the amount of pollen on these areas until you have them professionally cleaned and Chem-Dry can apply an anti-allergen on the carpets and upholstery.
